If you truly want to innovate, invent, or to keep your creative juices flowing then you need to consider cross pollination. You need to consider how important it is to straddle categories, and borrow from one industry to use in another. Many innovators and designers borrow from nature when designing products, cars, or tools.

There are two lines of thinking in innovation as to where to get innovative products from. The traditional belief was that you should survey all your customers and ask them what they want, and they would tell you and that you would produce it, and they would buy it. Most corporations want to innovate and spend money on research and development, realizing that they will make money in the long run if they continue to press forward. It seems these days that all of our consumer products are getting more and more complicated with more and more features. Of course, the reality is sometimes it is important to de-innovate products, and simplify them so we can lower the cost and please the most amount of people.

Research and development departments and innovation teams need to be constantly coming up with new ideas. In fact, to solve a given problem they may need 40, 50, maybe even 100 ideas. Then they need to go through each one of them and get rid of the ones that don’t make sense, might cost too much money, or even take too long to implement.
